Coach Alex, as his rowers call him, has been a leader in the Sarasota rowing community for over 15 years. Coach Alex is a former Olympic rower who has devoted his life to the sport of rowing. For the last 30 years he has coached all levels of rowers from beginners to competitive racers. From 2003 to 2012 Coach Alex was the Head Coach of the Sarasota Scullers Youth Rowing Program. While coaching the Sarasota Scullers, the team progressed from a moderately successful team to the Florida State Overall Team Points champion and winner of several State Championship Titles.
SCRC is more than just a racing club and Coach Alex is much more than just a racing coach. He is a US Rowing Certified Level 1, 2 and 3 Rowing Coach. He just recently returned from a week of coaching masters rowers at the renowned Craftsbury Sculling Center in Vermont. He is passionate about rowing and enjoys using his knowledge and experience to introduce beginners to the sport. He has coached Learn to Row Programs for SCRC in the past and several of our Board members received their first lessons from Coach Alex. The past few summers Alex has been coaching an innovative Learn to Row camp for high school freshman from the Newtown area in Sarasota. The camp introduces disadvantaged kids to rowing with the hope that the exposure to the sport may lead to other rowing opportunities.
When Alex was coach of the Scullers, the club began hosting a regatta at what is now known as Nathan Benderson Park and it was Coach Alex’s vision to bring elite rowing and racing to Sarasota. Before he moved to Sarasota, Alex had seen Benderson Lake in aerial photos and recognized its potential as a world class rowing venue. For years Alex worked with the County and his contacts in the rowing community to make his vision a reality. He was instrumental in the development of Nathan Benderson Park as a world class rowing venue and host of the 2017 World Rowing Championships.
Our club mission is to promote masters rowing in Sarasota for all levels of rowers and Coach Alex can help us fulfill that mission. He will be coaching Learn to Row Programs as well as Novice, Recreational and Competitive sessions.
